Papa John's Tracks It's Pizza Drivers by GPS using "Enhanced Customer Service" as its cover

Papa John's LogoIf you think Domino's new online pizza-tracking service is cool, check out what some Papa John's pizza shops are doing - in the name of customer service!

An 11-store group around Huntsville, Ala., late last year forged a relationship with TrackMyPizza a startup company that lets customers track on an online map exactly where their pizzas are, with updates every 15 seconds as they're being delivered to customers.
And they are allegedly doing this to enhance the customer ordering experience. Rememember the old pizza adage - After 30 minutes of waiting hunger turns to anger

But are they really just doing it to improve employee productivity and to keep tabs on its notoriously difficult-to -locate delivery drivers?
Customers call their orders in or place them online. They then enter their phone number on TrackMyPizza to track their delivery. The drivers are equipped with GPS-enabled handsets that feed location data to TrackMyPizza's server. There, the data is coupled with the customer's phone number, allowing tracking data to be "pushed" out to the customer via the TrackMyPizza Web site.
All sounds harmless enough - but what about the driver who takes a slight detour on the way back to his shop to buy cigarettes or other supplies. Previously, it was easy for a delivery driver to slip away unnoticed for 10 minuuted to allow him to catch up on a few errands- but now all that will have to stop.
Pizza delivery drivers are often the eyes and ears of a local community. Thinking of moving house? Ask your Domino's driver for a list of undesireable neighbourhoods or noisy appartment blocks.
Who is going to serve as soft-drug couriers for the local community if you know your boss can track not just your current position but also retrospectively check all your movements for the previous week?

The Papa John's TrackMyPizza feature, for customers in that region, takes the arms race for pizza-tracking technology to another level, removing even that much uncertainty from a pizza buyer's life. Tracking the delivery street by street, Super Bowl viewers could know exactly when to leave their TVs to meet the pizza guy at the door.

The Alabama Papa John's group started working late last year with TrackMyPizza, a privately held startup founded by two telemetry scientists who spent 10 years tracking defense missiles for the U.S. government.

For the stores where TrackMyPizza is available, about 18% of all delivery customers in the last 60 days have gone online to track their pizzas, even if they ordered by phone, said Tom VanLandingham, operating partner for the regional Papa John's group. Online orders are up 100% since the service started, and that's a big advantage to a pizza shop. Not only does it save employees time answering the phone, online customers spend on average about $2 more with each order, since they can see the full menu,

VanLandingham said. Papa John's also will soon begin using the tracking system for behind-the-scenes productivity gains, such as better plotting of deliveries based on location data.

TrackMyPizza itself relies on a mapping engine built by Randy Younger, the company's chief operating officer, and Ken Blankshain, its CTO, using geo data available from the U.S. government.

"Whoever said pizzas aren't rocket science?" said TrackMyPizza CEO David Neel. Domino's ambitious plans for its system suggest there could be a broad market for such consumer-facing tracking tools. Said Neel, "It's another example of how to empower the customer and improve the customer experience."

Garbage. We all know it is so the store owner can keep a track of his employees' whereabouts

5 Reasons To Choose a No Cheese Pizza

Europeans have long known the wonders of cheese-free pizza made with fresh and flavorful ingredients. Yet, in the United States, deep dish pizzas loaded with piles of stringy cheese are more than the norm, they are practically the rule in many pizza parlors

The Bull Market That's Killing Domino's Pizza in the US

"We have no choice but to raise prices substantially," said Dick Bond last week...

Dick Bond is CEO of Tyson Foods. Tyson is the world's largest processor of chicken, beef, and pork. Corn is Tyson's largest expense. That's because chicken, beef, and pork are ultimately just different forms of processed corn with higher profit margins.

Right now, corn prices are at 12-year highs because of the U.S. government's drive to produce ethanol. And higher corn prices have led to higher wheat and soybean prices. Wheat is at an all-time high. Soybeans are at an all-time high. The most recent quarterly earnings at Tyson Foods declined 40% because of these high grain prices.

According to Bond, government mandates for corn-based ethanol drove up grain prices, which have cascaded through other agricultural markets. "Cooking oil, flour, and other feed ingredients are all on the rise," said Bond. "For the foreseeable future, consumers will pay more and more for food, especially protein."

Domino's Pizza is another company feeling cost pressure. Cheese makes up 50% of the cost of a pizza. Cheese prices jumped 15% in 2007. Flour prices are also rising strongly. Bread prices rose 7.5% last year. And according to Goldman Sachs, wheat stocks in the United States are the lowest they've been since 1948.

So far, Domino's has resisted raising the price of its pizza in the United States – it will raise prices in the United Kingdom – and is paying for it. In its most recent profit report, Domino's reported a 55% decline in earnings. By the end of 2007, Domino's share price had fallen 70% from its 52-week high.

Kraft owns brands like DiGiorno Pizza, Maxwell House, Oreo, Oscar Mayer, and Philadelphia Cream Cheese. Kellogg is America's largest cereal maker. Both companies reported fourth-quarter results two weeks ago. Kraft's earnings fell 6.3% compared to the same period last year. Kellogg's earnings declined 3% over the same period.

"The fourth quarter was one of the worst ever for food companies in terms of commodity costs," said Reuters, commenting on the announcements by Kellogg and Kraft.

I wrote to my farmland contact – a hog farmer in Sioux County, Iowa – to find out how higher prices had affected life in the Midwest.

"I don't think locals are manic about Ag yet," says Roger, "though land prices have tripled in the past five years."

Roger says many of the grain elevators near him are close to insolvency. Grain elevators buy grain from farmers and then hold it in storage until the customers show up.

To protect themselves from falling prices – while the grain is held in storage – they take short positions in the futures markets. Roger says these short positions can generate huge margin calls when crop prices rise... and destroy the profits at grain elevators. The average grain elevator in Iowa, he says, pays an extra $2 million per day when prices move up just half the daily limit allowed on the exchange.

I think this boom still has decades to run, even though the easy money is probably gone. The easiest way to play it is through the PowerShares DB Agriculture Fund. The symbol is DBA. This fund moves in line with corn, wheat, soybean, and sugar futures.

You should also expect higher bills at the checkout counter and in restaurants for many years to come...

Gadget of the Month: Left-handed Pizza Scissors?

There is very little to say about this month's gadget except that they are not just designed to cut your pizza, but they also double up as a pizza slice in case the one you stole from Pizza Hut when you were a student has gone missing!

Something similar if not the same is available from Amazon at just $9.95

Technical Point: The eagle-eyed among you will notice these scissors are being used left-handed. I do not know if they are designed for lefties to use or if the person was just holding them that way for artistic effect.

If you are left-handed and are looking for specialist tools visit AnythingLeftHanded. They have a great selection for those of you with sinister tendencies!

Pizza Hut Reveals New Thai Delivery Logo

Pizza Hut ThailandYum Restaurants International (Thailand) yesterday introduced a new logo for its Pizza Hut home delivery service as part of its marketing plan to lift sales this year.

The redesigned logo was created in hopes of strengthening the brand awareness of Pizza Hut in the delivery segment, said Nongnuch Buranasetkul, the company's marketing director.

The concept represents not only the ''hot'' delivery service but also its good quality and continual promotion and innovation.

''In other words, it aims to show that Pizza Hut is now offering its customers more than just a quick service,'' she said.

Ms Nongnuch said the new logo would help to remind existing customers and also convince new customers that Pizza Hut is always improving its products and also provides a variety of choices apart from pizza.

This year, Yum expects to see its sales increase by 20%. It would focus more on its delivery services because the delivery market is expected to grow by 5-10% this year.

''According to our research, pizza is suitable for the home delivery service because it's ready to eat. Customers do not need to bother themselves preparing ingredients or washing dishes,'' said Ms Nongnuch.

Amid the gloomy economy, the company is considering raising the prices of some products due mainly to higher ingredient costs, said Ms Nongnuch.

Last year, Yum raised the price of its Hawaiian pizza by 10 baht to 260 baht on the back of a 30% rise in the price of cheese, its first price increase since 2005.
She added that the company expected to increase the number of Pizza Hut outlets to 91 from 76 by year end.

Widnes Vikings Agree 2 Year Domino's Pizza Sponsorship Deal

Domino's Pizza Rugby

Widnes Vikings have agreed a two-year deal with Domino's Pizza sponsor the family enclosure at Stobart Stadium Halton.

The pizza chain also has an option for a further three years.

Vikings' commercial manager Mike Banks said: "I'm delighted that Domino's Pizza has signed a new sponsorship deal with us and we hope to make further announcements regarding additional sponsors signing up with Vikings in the near future."

Domino's Pizza franchisee Peter Thompson said "I am looking forward to this partnership and would particularly like to thank St Helens Franchisee Simon Pickles for his invaluable behind-the-scenes work on concluding this deal :-)"

Vikings are kicking off the new relationship with a special family ticket offer for the next two home Northern Rail Cup fixtures against Barrow on Sunday and Blackpool on March 2.

Family tickets, pre-booked before 5pm on Friday, will cost £20, which gives supporters one adult ticket and one junior ticket in the Domino's Family Enclosure.

A further junior ticket can be purchased for just £2 (maximum of two juniors accompanying an adult).

The club have also introduced a second offer for adult fans where they can purchase a ticket valid for both games for £20 - provided they are pre-booked before 5pm on Friday.

Australian Heart Foundation Causes Uproar by Giving "Healthy Tick" to Chain's Takeaway Pizzas

First it was hamburgers that got a health makeover; now it's the turn of pizza.

The National Heart Foundation in Australia is to award its well-known red tick of approval to a chain of takeaway pizzerias on the grounds they are much better for you than mass-market alternatives. pizza tick

Crust Gourmet Pizza Bars, which has 16 stores in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, created six new pizzas to win the accolade.

Announcing the move, the Heart Foundation took a swipe at national chains Pizza Hut and Domino's, saying their pizzas were laden with up to four times the amount of saturated fat and more than twice the amount of salt as Crust's. The Heart Foundation said it analysed nine comparable types of pizza from Pizza Hut, Domino's and Crust.

The Heart Foundation's food supply strategy director Susan Anderson said the foundation was "horrified at the results".

"Pizza from the two top chains contained on average more than 5g of salt and 20g of saturated fat, which is what you should be getting in one day, not one meal," she said.

"It was clear that this industry needed some nutritional benchmarks, so we've taken action to give this industry the shake-up it needs."

pizza tick2One of the freshly ticked pizzas – the roast chicken pizza with button mushrooms, sweet potato, roasted tomato, baked ricotta and mozzarella – has just 5.3g of saturated fat and 880mg of sodium, compared with 20.7g of fat and 2087mg of sodium in a comparable Domino's pizza.

The foundation's latest foray into fast food looks set to reignite a controversy it created last year, when it teamed up with McDonald's to award the tick to nine meal combinations.

However, none of the approved meals included the US-based chain's signature fries, leading to criticism from some nutritionists that many people would negate the benefits by ordering unhealthy extras.

Companies pay annual fees to the Heart Foundation for the right to display the tick, which the foundation says covers the costs of random audits and testing.

In the case of restaurants and takeaway outlets, the fee is based on the number of branches.

Nutritionist Rosemary Stanton said the danger of the new tick was that it might give people the impression pizzas were healthy.

Eat Your Pizza Quick Or Get a Ticket!

This story has just come to our attention and I have to say how ridiculous this is. We all know that when eating at Pizza Hut it can sometimes take 45 minutes just for the starters to arrive! Only Joking!

"Shoppers are boycotting a major retail park after a new parking enforcement scheme was put into place - which has left some angry motorists with £150 fines.

A new 90-minute parking limit has been enforced at the Interchange Retail Park in Copdock, near Ipswich.

Earlier this month, the EADT reported how Alan Fordham's trip to choose his daughter's laptop turned into a much more expensive outing after he stayed too long in the car park, unaware of the new scheme.

Now, more angry customers have complained they have been caught out by the new limit, which is indicated by yellow signs at the entrance to the site, with more recently being added around the car park.

Diners at the Pizza Hut restaurant on the retail park have argued the limit does not offer enough time to enjoy a meal with friends.

The restaurant said it was not consulted about the new limits and is backing customers' efforts to have them overturned.

Shoppers at the PC World and Currys stores have also told the EADT they feel now rushed into deciding on expensive equipment.

Diane Peake, 32, from Ipswich, was one of four friends who dined at Pizza Hut recently who has been given notification of a £75 fine, rising to £150, through her door from Civil Enforcement Ltd.

“It is just ridiculous. I would not go back there again because we would just be permanently watching the clock,” she said.

“At Pizza Hut the girl was happy to serve us for two hours but did not say anything so I think they let us down as well.

“I just do not want other people to go out for what they think is going to be a cheap lunch and then get stung with a big fine. We did not even realise we had got one until a week later.”

She said she had not seen any signs on the Pizza Hut building.

Colin Howard, 81, from Harkstead, said he and his wife had paid the fine as a goodwill gesture but had written to the company to ask them to reconsider.

Mr Howard, who uses a walking stick, said: “Ninety minutes is just quite unreasonable for people like ourselves and it is a job to find and speak to the staff about your problems within that time.”

He added with the possibility of a second fine being in the post for using the park twice recently, he would “not be inclined” to return there.

A spokesman for Pizza Hut told the EADT: “We understand our customers' concerns about the time restrictions that have been recently been introduced at The Interchange Retail Park.

“As a family dine-in restaurant, we would not want our customers to feel hurried while eating their meal.

“As these restrictions were introduced without our knowledge or consent, we are currently in negotiations with the owners of the retail park and hope to resolve this issue quickly.”

A spokesperson from the DSGi group, which represents Currys and PC World, said: “We're monitoring the situation closely and we'd encourage our customers to make us aware of any concerns they have.”

Civil Enforcement, which issues the fines, were unavailable to respond on the issue last night

Pizza Hut Sued for Discrimination

Pizza HutThree gay men from Wales are suing Pizza Hut for sexual discrimination after they were refused service at a restaurant in Blackpool.

Michael Kemp, 42, Paul Barnabas, 47, and his partner Iain Buck, 38, were among nine gay men and transsexuals who visited the Church Street restaurant.

The group, some of whom were in women's clothes, were told to go elsewhere as the venue had run out of pizzas.

Pizza Hut said it was taking the allegation "extremely seriously".

The incident, which happened last July, followed a ruling made three months before which made it illegal for retailers and catering establishments to refuse to serve customers on the grounds of their sexual orientation, religions or beliefs.

However, at the moment the law does not incorporate transsexuals.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is considering representing the case but a decision will not be made until the end of the month.

Mr Kemp is a member of Encompass, a group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual people in Flintshire.

A spokesman for the organisation said: "The law is quite clear. It is now illegal for shops, bars or restaurants to refuse to serve anyone because of their sexual orientation.

"This group of people simply wanted to sit down and enjoy a pizza like anyone else, but instead were subjected to humiliation and told to go elsewhere.

"Quite rightly, they have now put in a claim of discrimination because of their sexual orientation."

A spokesperson for Pizza Hut said: "We find discrimination of any kind completely unacceptable and are taking this allegation extremely seriously.

"Unfortunately, we are unable to comment further as this matter has been passed to our solicitors."

Peter Piper Pizza Expands Again

Warren Kingsbury's grandchildren missed Peter Piper Pizza restaurants so much when they moved to Southern California a couple of years ago that the Chandler man decided to build them some.

Kingsbury landed Peter Piper franchise rights for San Bernardino and Riverside counties and plans to build at least five versions of the Scottsdale-based pizza-andplay chain in Southern California.

He already has a site picked out in Rancho Cucamonga, his extended family's new hometown, and he expects to build one eatery a year for the next handful of years.

The grandkids' appetites fit perfectly with the local chain's expansion plans, said Peter Piper CEO Frank Sbordone.

The company has 139 restaurants, 42 of them company-owned and the rest franchised. Sbordone plans to keep opening company-owned restaurants in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

He has 10 under development, including a version at Mesa Riverview, slated to open in May, and one at Queen Creek and Higley roads, expected to open before year's end.

That leaves little time to explore other ways to grow the brand.

"Because major markets take time to develop, we are focusing on these and looking for investors to develop others," Sbordone said.

Stranded Motorists Fed by Toppers Pizza

Toppers PizzaWell done to the Guys and Gals at Toppers Pizza of Whitewater and Madison, WI who each prepared 35 pizzas to feed some of the 800-plus motorists on I39 & I90 who were stranded for over 12 hours in last night's winter storm (Feb 07 2008)

Pizzas were delivered to the Rock & Dane county command posts in Stoughton and Newville, Wisconsin. Pizzas and water were delivered to the stranded motorists by fire fighters, police, and volunteers on snowmobiles and ATVs from around 11pm until around 1am.

"We just wanted to help those people; they had to be starving sitting in out there all that time. Our drivers deliver in bad weather all the time. We felt like we should be able to figure out a way to get some food out there. We felt bringing food was the least we could do." says Scott Gittrich, owner of the Madison and Whitewater Toppers Pizza stores.

Pizza Company "Delivers" 1 million Free Pies on Super Tuesday

Just as the largest, simultaneous number of U.S. presidential primary elections are being held across the country, Domino's Pizza will be e-mailing one million lucky customers an offer for a free pizza in the largest, synchronized e-mail blast in the company's history.

A free medium, one-topping pizza online ordering offer will be e-mailed to customers who opted-in to Domino's e-mail database as of Jan. 30, have never placed an order online, and are in the delivery areas of the 1,329 participating Domino's stores.

"While America is expressing its opinion on who should be the next president, Domino's is giving its customers the opportunity to order a free pizza online, track its progress using our new Pizza Tracker and immediately express their opinions on the service and quality of their Domino's experience," said Patrick Doyle, president of Domino's USA. "We're obsessed with great service. We measure performance. Now we can prove it every step of the way."

Domino's Pizza Tracker allows customers to follow the progress of their order online from the time they click the "Place Order" button until the Domino's delivery expert is knocking on their door. Customers will see confirmation of their order being received by the store; when it's being prepared; when it's been placed in the oven; when it's been boxed and placed in the Domino's HeatWave(TM) bag; and finally, when it's on its way for delivery.

The free medium, one-topping e-mail offer will include a unique, one-time use promotion code that will expire at midnight on Feb. 7. Domino's minimum delivery requirement will be waived for customers using this promotion code. Customers can sign up for "Hot E-mail Offers" at http://www.dominos.com

Little People Make Little Papa John's Pizzas

Papa John's CommunityIn our World of Corporate Pizza, it's nice to bring you a story about a Franchisee reaching out into his local community.

Wil Dewey, a kindergarten student at Northeast Elementary School, left, watches Spencer Strickland, a kindergarten student at Caroline, finish making their pizza Thursday morning during the two classes' visit to Papa John's Pizza in Ithaca.

The two classes taught by friends Peggy Weber at Caroline and Sandy Rouleau at Northeast, visited the Tompkins County Public Library after the trip to Papa John's as a part of the ongoing Kids Discover the Trail effort by the Ithaca Public Education Initiative to get all students in the Ithaca City School District to eight different museums and educational institutions around the county.

The visit to Papa John's was made possible by owner Jamie McVannan, top right, who knows Northeast School parent Myra Hubbell.
