Is Chris The World's Tallest Pizza Delivery Guy?

Chris GlossopPizza deliveryman Chris Glossop finds work a bit of a tall order.

Well, when you are 7ft in height you do tend to stand out head and shoulders above everyone else in a very competitive business.

So when he is out and about dispatching delicious fast food to customers, 34-year-old Chris can genuinely boast he's certainly on top of his job.

The long and the short of it is that Chris is proud to be a man with altitude!

Bachelor Chris, of Canal Street, Macclesfield, has worked at Gio's takeaway pizza on Sunderland Street for two years and is the tallest pizza producer in Macclesfield - probably in Britain.

Former Poynton High pupil, Chris, who wears size 14 shoes and sports a 40-inch inside leg, said: "Occasionally people are a bit surprised when I turn up at the door, but the regulars know me now. They don't notice, really."

Height does seem to run in his family, although his granddad, Donald, 90, is quite a bit shorter at 6ft 4in, with his mum, Anne, 6ft, and his dad John, 62, a somewhat diminutive 5ft 8in.

Chris, a keen Manchester United fan, works during the week as a pensions officer at Royal London in Wilmslow, but piles on the pepperoni at the weekends, delivering all over Macclesfield to earn extra cash.

And now that Gio's has permission to expand by opening a grilled chicken parlour next door to the takeway, Chris is facing an even TALLER order helping lift the business to new heights.

"I expect he will take it in his ample stride as usual," said boss, manager Ali Tagai. "He's a giant among men."

Did you Leave a Slice of Pizza out for Santa?

santa pizzaFollowing our recent post about what food to leave out for Santa on Christmas Eve, we were bombarded with loads of suggestions, and the ones we can print are detailed here!

As you may expect from readers of this blog, pizza was our favourite treat to leave out for the Ol' Man. It seems that as the eating habits of our nations change we are relying more on convenience and less on tradition.

Mary from Nashville insisted on baking her own cookies and a glass of milk (semi-skimmed of course - so that Santa will still be able to fit into his suit next year!). See the picture below.

I am not sure if Mike was pulling our leg as he was adamant that what Santa devours when he visits his apartment in Chicago is fried chicken, green beans and corn bread.

Christine in Warrington England leaves a message on the fridge invited FC to help himself - and not to bother with the washing up.

And what about his team of reindeer?

Carrots of course proved very popular, though there were also plenty of suggestions of oatmeal and glitter, and a lady from Wisconsin who swears by Shredded Wheat (with Ex-Lax sprinkled over). You see reindeer are immune to its effects - but unfortunately her husband isn't!

And so we come to the English tradition of mince pies and a glass of sherry. Well, once again it would appear that this quaint tradition is on its way out as, in our house at least, only a few crumbs remained from the slice of Pepperoni Passion that was left out for the Great Northern Present Giver.

In fact come to think of it, here is a man who would probably make the best pizza delivery boy ever. No need to waste time knocking on the customer's door - just slip straight down the chimney.

And as for routing up double and triple bag runs - well that would certainly present no problem for a man who visits a billion houses every time he goes out on delivery!

Indian Pizza Chain Set For Rapid Expansion

indian pizza Aiming for a pan-Indian coverage, United Pizza Restaurant has announced plans of expanding the number of outlets from the current 58 to 150 by the end of 2008. According to Akbar Khwaja, its managing director, the focus will mainly be on tier II and tier III cities.

Explaining the company's investment plans, he said, "Till now, all our investments were through internal accruals. For the first round of expansion, we have tied up with a private equity partner. Post that, we will be funding primarily through franchises and internal accruals."

Currently, United Pizza has a presence in 27 cities, and according to Khwaja, plans are on to expand to 60 cities by the end of 2008. The main cities that the group plans to focus on in the next quarter will be Indore, Gandhidham, Raipur, Jaipur, Karnal, Gwalior in the north and Kannur, Kochi and Hubli in the south. United Pizza is also looking into expanding internationally.

"We will first expand within Sweden and Norway. However, the back-end will be in India. We also plan to move into China and the Far East. We would finish expanding within India first and then focus internationally," said Khwaja.

United Pizza has also entered into corporate tie-ups with HPCL, Accenture, Wipro, Dell and other companies to set up its franchise. Khwaja said that the chain is looking at tie-ups with theatre chains too. "However, we would be working more on their capital than ours," he added.

In keeping with the company's motto of healthy fast food, United Pizza is also setting up a fast food R&D centre in Bangalore which would be headed by the founder chairman, Vahid Berenjian.

Ideas For Your New Year's Pizza Party from Wolfgang Puck

Here the original Celebrity Chef Wolfgang Puck explains wolfgang pluckhow to make great pizza for your New Year's Party.

A NEW YEAR'S PIZZA PARTY
By Wolfgang Puck
Although I love it when guests fill my restaurants for New Year's Eve, I know that many people would rather hold parties at home. That way, they don't have to worry about making reservations or driving late at night. And they can feel free to enjoy a glass or more of Champagne or sparkling wine without having to designate a driver.

But what do you cook at home to serve with the bubbly? I think pizza is a perfect answer, especially pizza with a topping designed to complement that festive drink......

Prison Hostage Takers Demand 15 Pizzas (and a Garlic Bread)

prison pizza A prison guard in Australia was taken hostage for two days when twenty inmates at the Risdon Prison in Hobart, Tasmania, AU surrounded and captured him in protest over the conditions at the maximum security prison.

Initially the prisoners made 24 demands to the prison, However they finally freed their hostage after agreeing to fifteen pizzas, Coca-Cola and garlic bread instead.

It would seem that "At midnight, the final hurdle with the prisoners was all they wanted was to be able to order pizza from prison and have them delivered. The guard negotiated out with the delivery of fifteen pizzas", Graeme Barber, Tasmania's director of prisons said.

What happened to the guard? Sorry to say no pizza for him, He is recovering from the whole ordeal at home

New Orleans Pizza Company Bans HFCS

There are plenty of places to get your pizza around the World, not just from the big companies. One 2-site operator in New Orleans is building his brand by promoting healthy ingredients as part of a healthy lifestyle. And I think we would all agree with that.

Here is a press release explaining why they will no longer be selling products containing High-Fructose Corn Syrup. May I suggest you also take a look around the rest of their website? It's a great example of how to promote your business and its ethics on the internet.

"New Orleans - Effective January 1, 2008, New Orleans-based World's Healthiest Pizza (WHP) will ban all products containing high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS, HFCS-55). This will include all soft drinks, such as Coke©, and any ingredients used to produce our pizza.

According to Co-founder Jeff Leach, "the banning of HFCS products from our stores is consistent with our mission of improving the health and well-being of all our customers and providing great tasting and healthy alternatives to what is being currently offered in the city."

Co-Founder Randy Crochet adds, "we are not attempting to limit customer choices but rather trying to lead a movement in the New Orleans area among restaurant businesses to take a stand on healthier alternatives and attempt to make a difference."

WHP acknowledges that the current research on HFCS suggests that HFCS in and of itself does not cause obesity. It does, however, contribute to excess caloric intake with few if any beneficial nutrients and, according to Jeff Leach, "HFCS, as a substitute for sucrose (table sugar) is rapidly digested and absorbed and thus elicits an unnecessary spike in the hormone insulin. Excess insulin can lead to hyperinsulimia (elevated levels of insulin in the body) which may contribute to complications associated with insulin resistance, diabetes and the body's inability to metabolize fatty acids stored in adipose tissue (translation: weight gain)."

Pizza Wins Poll of Worst Christmas Cracker Jokes Ever

pizza christmas WHAT is Santa’s favourite pizza? One that is deep pan, crisp and even.

That lame line has been voted the nation’s worst Christmas cracker joke.

But it faced some tough competition in the festive survey.

Runners-up included:

What do you call a woman who stands between two goal posts? Annette.

Who hides in the bakery at Christmas? A mince spy.

Andrew Linn, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sheffield, deconstructed the top-placed gag.

“The essence of a fine joke is clever and original use of language, often exploiting some sort of ambiguity. This joke has been voted the worst Christmas cracker joke because it is almost too clever,” Prof Linn said.

“It uses ambiguity in how the words are put together (’deep pan’ ’deep and’) as well as contextual ambiguity (pizzas and a Christmas carol). In short, once you get it, it’s a real groaner.”

The survey was commissioned by a top men’s magazine.

Spokesman for the magazine said: “The gags in crackers are normally so bad that everyone laughs at the stupidity of them. That’s what brings everyone together and it would almost be a shame if manufacturers tried to make them too clever.”

With thanks to The Sun from where this story originates.

School Kids Learn How to Bake the Perfect Pizza

hale pizza express ALTRINCHAM Preparatory School recently enjoyed a school visit that topped the lot when they were given a lesson in cooking the perfect pizza at Hale's Pizza Express.

During the visit the boys were able to bake fresh pizzas under the watchful eye of top chef Pawel, which they were then able to take home.

There were also lessons in cookery, nutrition, food hygiene and storage as the mini commis chefs toured the kitchen, fridges and freezers.

APS year two teacher Jayne Knowles said: "The visit is useful in bringing our science curriculum to life and the staff at Pizza Express are always very polite and helpful."

She added: "I have to admit this is one of favourite school trips, maybe because I also get my own freshly baked pizza to take home."

12 Things You Now Know About Pizza

pizza slice We "Dugg Up" these 12 facts about pizza

Just hearing the word "pizza" brings a smile to the face of just about every American. Whatever style or variety -- from thick, Chicago-style deep-dish pizza stuffed with gobs of cheese, sausage, and pepperoni to a thin-as-a-cracker crust topped with veggies -- pizza invariably makes it to the top of "favorite food" lists.

Here, we've compiled a list of fun and interesting facts about this American food icon. See how many you knew!

1. Since 1987, October has been officially designated National Pizza Month in the United States.

2. Approximately three billion pizzas are sold in the United States every year, plus an additional one billion frozen pizzas.

3. Pizza is a $30 billion industry in the United States.

4. Pizzerias represent 17 percent of all U.S. restaurants.

5. Ninety-three percent of Americans eat pizza at least once a month.

6. Women are twice as likely as men to order vegetarian toppings on their pizza.

7. About 36 percent of all pizzas contain pepperoni, making it the most popular topping in the United States.

8. The first known pizzeria, Antica Pizzeria, opened in Naples, Italy, in 1738.

9. More pizza is consumed during the week of the Super Bowl than any other time of the year.

10. On average, each person in the United States eats around 23 pounds of pizza every year.

11. The first pizzeria in the United States was opened by Gennaro Lombardi in 1895 in New York City.

12. The record for the world's largest pizza depends on how you slice it. According to Guinness World Records, the record for the world's largest circular pizza was set at Norwood Hypermarket in South Africa in 1990. The gigantic pie measured 122 feet 8 inches across, weighed 26,883 pounds, and contained 9,920 pounds of flour, 3,968 pounds of cheese, and 1,984 pounds of sauce. In 2005, the record for the world's largest rectangular pizza was set in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Pizza restaurant owner Bill Bahr and a team of 200 helpers created the 129 X 98.6-foot pizza from 4,000 pounds of cheese, 700 pounds of sauce, and 9,500 sections of crust. The enormous pie was enough to feed the town's 5,200 residents ten slices of pizza each.

Heaven - Free Pizza with Beer in Boston

Our founding fathers may not have had this night specifically in mind when they wrote the Constitution, but I think it's fair to say that given a little more time to hash out the details they would have all agreed that free pizza with beer should be an inalienable right of all Americans. Crossroads does their patriotic duty with this genius promotion. Buy a pitcher of beer for $8, get a pizza. It's a simple but brilliant economic theory. Ohio Man Accused of Using Poor Pizza Etiquette

Harrison 17/12/07
An Ohio man was seeing blue after his demand for great service led to the Anderson City Police delivering feedback from Papa John’s Pizza.

Police declined to make an arrest after confronting Michael Groves, 35, about 9:30 p.m. Sunday at the Mainstay Suites on Civic Center Boulevard.

Mr. Groves, who is working with a construction crew, told a pizza clerk that “he wanted a pizza delivered and that there had better not be anything wrong with his pizza order when it arrived or something was going to get blown up,” according to Officer Wes Barnes’ report.

“We found (Mr. Groves) to be extremely intoxicated to the point that he thought we were delivering his pizza, and he tried to hand me a $20 bill when he answered the door to pay for his pizza.”

Pizza Boss Outraged at Penis Size Slur

Pizza chains in Australia are at war over accusations of shrinking pizzas with one chain producing a YouTube video suggesting another chain's pizza delivery drivers have small penises.

Australia’s biggest pizza chain, Domino's, today admitted reducing the size of its pizzas, in response to a similar move by Pizza Hut.

A Domino’s spokesperson said the size change – introduced in May and June this year – was necessary to remain “competitive in the market”.

The Domino’s admission followed an attack by rival Eagle Boys, which recently issued a press release claiming that “some of Australia's large multinational pizza chains have been caught selling smaller pizzas.

“Multinationals like Domino’s Pizza are selling smaller pizzas than Eagle Boys and expected customers not to notice,” said Eagle Boys marketing manager Scott Hamilton.

“It’s disgraceful and frankly un-Australian”. Don Meij

Domino’s chief executive Don Meij said his smaller pizzas were “in response to our largest competitor Pizza Hut, who changed their size late last year”.

“It is interesting that Eagle Boys has chosen to attack us and not them, considering Pizza Hut instigated this,” he said.

Pizza Hut has declined to comment.

Mr Meij also attacked an Eagle Boys YouTube video which suggests male Domino’s delivery drivers have small penises.

The Eagle Boys video satirises a controversial NSW Roads and Traffic Authority television ad that shows women waving a pinky finger at speeding male drivers.

The RTA ad scorns speeding male drivers as having small penises. See this advert at the bottom of the page.

The Eagle Boys satirical ad is part of a marketing campaign and also appears on an Eagle Boys website.

Mr Meij said Domino’s reserved its right to take legal action over the ad.

“The only unfortunate thing there is that is it degrading to our team members,” Mr Meij said.

“I’m going to write personally to their CEO kindly and politely.

“Look, it’s fair enough that we compete, but why would you want to degrade our team members? It’s nothing to do with them.”

Eagle Boys commissioned what it claims was “independent research” showing its pizzas were now “up to 10 per cent larger than Domino's pizzas.

“In some cases, Eagle Boys' pizzas were up to 3cm larger in diameter or more than 20 per cent bigger in diameter,” the chain said.

It’s unclear if prices shrunk with the size, as pizza prices change rapidly with ever-changing menus and promotions.

Domino's is Australia’s largest pizza chain, last year selling $519m worth of pizzas in its 470 Australian stores. Domino’s is predicting a 25 to 30 per cent increase in profits next year.

"Due to the nature of our pizzas, it was a very small percentage (decrease) of our pizza size," a Domino’s spokesperson said earlier today.

The World's Largest Potato Wedge?

World's Largest Potato Wedge

After months of training, progressing from local heats and a regional qualifying competition, this potato wedge from Lancashire was proclaimed the triumphant UK National Winner of the 2007 Britain's Largest Potato Wedge Competition, at a tense final in Milton Keynes at the weekend.

Beating off stiff competition from around the country, the winning trainer Spud Murphy, was proud to accept the acclamation of his fellow "Wedgies" - as they are known in the industry.

"We searched long and hard for the perfect wedge, one that met all the criteria for length and breadth, before finally coming across this one in a bag several months ago. When we opened the bag, it just jumped out at us. We felt like Charlie Bucket finding the Golden Ticket in the Wonka Bar. We knew it would be a Winner"

And its now all systems go for the winning team as they fly off to Las Vegas where it will represent the UK at the biennial World Potato Championships next month, where they will compete for the coveted title of The Largest Potato Wedge in The World.

We wish them luck!

Pizza Express Immortalises Royal Family in Topping Art

Pizza Express celebrated its 40th birthday a couple of years back and since it shares it with the Queen (21st April apparently, so we are either late or early on this one), the Pizza people commissioned a series of portraits of the doughy royals.
Nice to see Camilla getting a pizza the action, though there was no mention of whether Charles's pizza was an organic one, but one would hope so, wouldn't one?
Apparently this was all over the internet some time ago, but I thought some of our readers from the Colonies might have missed it first time around.

Will the Hint of an Old Promise Woo Domino's Customers?

Update: Here is one of the ads

Domino's Delivery Driver Here is the header and then a link to the full article from The Wall St Journal about Domino's New Advertising Campaign.

"It's been 14 years since Domino's last promised to deliver a pizza to someone's door within 30 minutes, but that pledge is still stuck in many customers' heads. Now, the chain is trying to hearken back to that hardy ad campaign -- this time without getting sued.

Domino's made its name in pizza delivery by running ads that offered a discounted or free pie if the driver didn't arrive within 30 minutes of an order. But in 1993, a St. Louis woman who was involved in an auto accident with a Domino's delivery person sued the company on the grounds that the 30-minute pledge led to accidents. Domino's later settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed sum that the company says was in the seven-figure range, and, fearing a wave of similar lawsuits, abandoned the promise....

Pizza Business Owner Turns Santa's Helper for Holidays

Cliff Montano Cliff Montano believes strongly that a person should give as much of himself to help another as possible.

The owner of Brick Oven Pizza in Windsor, Colorado doesn't just believe those words, he lives them. He supports one good cause after another throughout the year.

But it might be during the holiday season that Montano does his best work.

The enthusiastic 44-year-old not only runs his seven-day-a-week pizza business but also oversees a Christmas tree/clothing and food donation enterprise that benefits the Windsor Food Pantry.

Montano, who has worked his tree/clothing/food charity effort out of his store during the past 10 years, moved it this year to the vacant lot just south of Guadalajara Restaurant.

On that site, Montano sells trees such as Douglas firs, white pines and balsams. He keeps just enough to pay his expenses and donates a percentage to the Food Pantry along with the food and clothes he collects.

And he collects a lot of those.

"I've given 260 coats to the church in the last three weeks," Montano said. "I've also taken over 50 boxes of food to the food pantry."

When asked how successful his holiday charity business is, Montano smiles.

"It's been very good," he said. "The people of Windsor have been great."

As if to prove his point, a customer came up to Montano and handed him two $20 bills.

"I just wanted to make a donation because I believe you do a great job," the man said before he turned and left.

"Did you see that?" Montano asked. "That's what I'm talking about. People in Windsor are great."

On a serious note, Ron is campaigning for there to be no taxation on tips.

Here is an extract from his website on that subject.

"It is an outrage that waiters, waitresses, and other service-sector employees have to pay taxes on the tips they earn. The IRS makes an estimate of how much service-sector workers will make in tips, and taxes them on it even if the taxpayer did not actually earn as much as the IRS' estimate!

Tips provide a substantial portion of the income of many service-sector employees, many of whom are young people just trying to make a few extra dollars to get through school, or single parents often balancing two jobs while trying to make enough to raise a family. This tax amounts to nothing more than the federal government punishing these employees for working hard and doing their jobs well.

I have introduced H.R. 3664 in Congress to end this problem. The Tax Free Tips Act of 2007 will exempt tips from federal income and payroll taxes. Ending taxes on tips will give workers an immediate pay raise, letting them keep more money to put toward things like a house or car payment, their retirement, or their own and/or their children's education.

When you give someone a tip, you should not have to simultaneously tip the federal government."

Sundried Tomato and Garlic Sauce Recipe

Here is a recipe for a great pizza base, using Sundried Tomatoes and extra garlic added to a pretty standard tomato pizza base. It goes great with vegetable or meat toppings. The choice is yours.

6 Cloves Garlic; Large, Minced
1 1/2 c Water

1/2 ts Basil; Dried
1/2 ts Oregano; Dried
1 ts Parsley; Dried
Salt & Pepper; To Taste

Pour the oil into a deep, heavy skilled over medium-high heat. Add the onion and green pepper then cook and stir for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and continue to cook, stirring, until the vegetables are tender. Add the water and then stir in the tomato paste, and sundried tomatoes. Sprinkle the sauce with the basil, oregano, and parsley. Lower the heat and let simmer for about 5 minuts. Add the salt and pepper to taste. If desired, add 2 to 3 dashes of hot pepper sauce. Let simmer, stirring often, about 30 minutes or until the sauce if very thick. Makes about 3 Cups of sauce. Prudence gets a Pizza the Action

Pizza lovers were in for a special treat as some dough-lightful Roman sculptures went on show in a Cardiff restaurant.

A pizza-mad food artist has created life-like Roman artefacts out of one third of a tonne of Pizza Express dough and yesterday they went on show at the High Street restaurant.

In creating famous Roman sites like the Colosseum, the Pope and the Spanish Steps, artist Prudence Emma Staite used enough dough to cook 500 pizzas and diners will be able to watch her at work.

The sculptures will be on show at the Cardiff eatery until Tuesday, December 18, and coincide with the launch of the new Roman menu.

The artist said: “Everyone thinks I’ve gone utterly bonkers. What better way to combine the two things I love most: art and food.”

How To Get More Sex

pizza sex Well I thought that would get you clicking, but hang on a minute before you down vote me, this is a serious story.

ITV1 in the UK has just screened this week's episode of "How to Get More Sex" and the scientifically-proven best chat up line at a speed dating evening is....wait for it....

"If you were a pizza topping which one would you be?"

Now I know it's not exactly earth-shatteringly funny or original - but maybe that's where we're going wrong.

Everyone loves pizza remember!

It's a nice easy ice-breaker of a question, with no right or wrong answers, lots of room for the answer to be as "tempting" as you want it to be and it can be asked by either sex.

So there you have it. One more of life's mysteries resolved for us all.

By the way, and I know you were dying to ask, but I would be an olive

"Total Demise of Pizza Hut" Predicted as Traffic Wardens Get Tough

WORTHING'S parking blitz is causing Saturday night fever among fast-food customers.
A small army of NCP parking attendants is swooping on cars parked in the town centre while drivers collected take-away meals from places such as Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

And motorists' reactions on returning to their cars were as heated as the food they had just collected.

They were "victims" of stricter enforcement of on-street, no-waiting regulations, a result of local councils taking over parking control from Sussex Police.

More traffic wardens patrolling in more places and for longer hours have been catching out many drivers who have been used to the previous, more relaxed regime.

One of the drivers experiencing the ticket blitz on Saturday, November 24 was was Keith Lockyer, of Bodmin Close, Worthing.

Mr Lockyer said: "I was in town at about 7pm to pick up my son, who was getting a takeaway.

"Parked outside Pizza Hut in my car in the bay, I was approached by a friendly warden asking me to move.

"There were three or four vehicles behind me, all waiting for Pizza Hut take-aways or Kentucky.
"If you were not in your vehicle, you got a ticket.

"I moved around the corner by H. Samuel, where I thought I could park among eight or nine vehicles causing no obstruction, but I was then told by a motorist that he got a ticket there last week!

"By now, there were 20-plus cars going round in circles waiting to pick people up.

"I then saw six wardens, plus their minder on a walkie-talkie, all descend at the same time on parked vehicles, and book them.

"If this is allowed to continue, you will see the total demise of Pizza Hut, Kentucky, possibly Iceland, and the shops that depend so much on take-away food.

"I know why it is happening and it's all about taking money from the motorist again.

"This is persecution at the extreme, as not one vehicle was in any way causing an obstruction.

"We will now not use these stores again, as there is no place elsewhere to park."

Mandy Ainsworth, Worthing Borough Council's on-street parking services manager, said: "The traffic regulations order where he was parked said 'no waiting at any time', and that continued round past H. Samuel as well.

"We would allow for five minutes to load and unload at that time of night, that would be permitted, but those drivers who do not stay with their vehicles are contravening the regulations."

Lincoln Papa John's is Cooking on Gas!

Thanks to our reader Toni who sent in news of an amazing feat by those guys from Papa's. They really turned on the heat.

A champion pizza-making quartet proved they can make the Italian treat at breakneck speed at this year's Pizza Olympics.
It was literally a case of fast food for the dream team from Papa John's pizza parlour in High Street, Lincoln, when they made and cooked 11 top quality 14in pizzas in less than 20 minutes. (Yes you did read that correctly) Their culinary finesse saw off competition from 44 other Papa John's pizza outlets in the north of the country and secured them a gold medal in the regional heats.
Owner of the Lincoln franchise and chef, Ranjit Johal (46) said he was proud of his team."We have some great pizza makers here," said Mr Johal."It was a real life situation as we made a variety of pizzas such as ham and pineapple and chicken barbecue so it wasn't too different from a busy Friday or Saturday night."The team - made up of Mr Johal, Miss Wass and fellow workers Cat Webb (21) and Anthony Neal (28) - travelled to Windsor for the national finals but were narrowly pipped to the post by a team from Taunton. Although the Somerset team made the same number of pizzas, a rigorous judging procedure - taking into account the evenness of the dough and spread of toppings - saw the Lincoln chefs walk away with a silver medal.

Pizza Hut/KFC Sells Up in Japan

Trading house Mitsubishi Corp. said Saturday that it successfully completed a friendly takeover of Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan Ltd., which owns more than 1,500 KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants around the country.

Mitsubishi, which already owned 31 percent of KFC Japan's shares, will pay ¥1,947 each for a further 7.62 million shares, the bulk of which are held by U.S.-based Kentucky Fried Chicken Corporate Holdings Ltd., it said in a statement.

The Tokyo-based trading company will hold nearly 65 percent of KFC Japan's voting shares as a result of the ¥14.83 billion transaction.

KFC Japan's board voted in favor of the tender offer, which was launched at the end of October and ran through Friday.

Mitsubishi said it plans to make the restaurant operator one of its subsidiaries.

Profit growth at KFC Japan has been sluggish because of intense competition in Japan's fast food market, rising material prices and hefty investments in systems operations.

In the year that ended Nov. 30, 2006, the company reported a net profit of ¥1.21 billion, up 8.9 percent from a year ago.

Tokyo-based KFC Japan operates 1,163 KFC restaurants and 357 Pizza Hut outlets across Japan. It employs about 1,100 people.

KFC Japan shares rose 2.08 percent Friday to finish at ¥1,960 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Domino's Pizza Eyes Singapore Openings

We like to bring you stories of different pizza markets around the World and we dug this one out from the Malaysian Star.

Derick de Souza"Dommal Food Services , the master franchise holder for Domino’s Pizza in Malaysia and Singapore, wants to open its pizza outlets in the republic.

Its operations manager Derick de Souza said although the company did not set any time frame to do so, it was hoping to have outlets there “the sooner the better”.

He said that years ago, there were a few Domino’s Pizza outlets in the republic managed by a Singapore-based master franchise holder but they were later closed down.

“Singapore is a good market for any fast-food operator due to a large number of tourists and its cosmopolitan city status,” he said.

Derick de Souza De Souza was speaking to StarBiz after the launch of “Deliciously Confidential” – three new promotional toppings of beef suspense, classified chicken and secret salmon.
He said the Singapore tourism industry was expected to grow further with the completion of two integrated resort (IR) projects in two years.

Consumers in Singapore were more exposed to international cuisine, as there were many international food and beverage operators there, he said.

De Souza said on average, Dommal ran each promotion campaign for 10 weeks as part of a strategy to make consumers more “excited to try something new”.
He said the company made one million pieces of pizzas yearly, with aloha chicken topping the best sellers' list followed by beef pepperoni and chicken pepperoni.

De Souza also said Dommal was looking to have more outlets in southern Johor, which would be developed into a global metropolis under the Iskandar Development Region (IDR) project.
“The tourism industry in the IDR is expected to develop with more international investors coming in and the spill over from the two IR projects,” he said.

He said the company would continue to focus on the delivery segment in its expansion programme, as most consumers liked having their pizzas delivered.

Currently, there are 32 Domino’s Pizza outlets – 26 in the Klang Valley, three in Johor Baru, two in Penang and one in Seremban.

Tunisia - Home of the Conical Pizza

Here's another entry in our Pizzas Around the World Series. Many thanks to the guys at Subzero Blue for bringing us this one.

"I think if there's any country in the world that could compete with Italy itself in the number of pizza places and pizza consumption, it'd definitely be Tunisia; there are at least two or three pizza places in every street or corner of every city.

So why am I writing about yet another one? Well, because this ones sell pizza that's not quite like the pizza we're used to finding everywhere.
Pizza Cono, like its name actually suggests, sells pizza in the form of cones. It is pizza dough shaped into the form of an ice cream cone, and filled with your favorite combination of cheese, sauce and toppings.

I was hesitant at first to go and check it out, I was expecting something that looked interesting but wasn't so good to really eat. But one day recently, we found ourselves in the area, hungry and feeling like trying something different, so why not. It turned out pretty good in fact, quite practical when you need to grab something to eat on the go. I imagine a really good option for people working in the area.

I still prefer regular pizza; one of the joys of eating pizza to me, other than its delicious taste, is its form and the way I get to hold a good old slice of pizza in my hand and eat away at it.

Anyway, it was nice to try out, and if you're in the area, check it out, if only for the sake of trying something new and different.

Oh and the whepizza conereabout of this place: It's in the Les Berges du Lac area, behind the Mosque.

Update 2 days later: Found on Flickr - it seems they do these in South Korea too

And in Japan!
